New goods and the skill premium ☆

چکیده

In a two-cone Heckscher–Ohlin model with CES preferences and a continuum of goods, new northern goods increase the northern skill premium if they are skilled-labor intensive, and may increase the premium if they are unskilled-labor intensive. Thus, the introduction of new goods into US technology could have done more to increase the US skill premium than a closed-economy model would predict. I also explore how new northern goods affect the southern skill premium and what happens if they generate preference-induced reversals across existing goods. I develop a two-step solution method that simplifies comparative static analyses in the two-cone Heckscher–Ohlin model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Skill Bias of World Trade

Under plausible assumptions about preferences and technology, the model in this paper suggests that the entire volume of world trade matters for wage inequality. Therefore, trade integration, even among identical countries, is likely to increase the skill premium. Further, we argue that empirical evidence of a falling relative price of skill-intensive goods can be reconciled with the fast growt...

Economic Liberalization and Rising College Premiums in Mexico: A Reinterpretation

— Mexico’s college premium rose in the 1990s. Studies employing structural decomposition analyses treat the college premium as the relative price of “skilled” to “unskilled” workers. They find that reallocations of labor across industries and occupations cannot account for rising college premiums, and often attribute them to widely observed trade-induced increases in skills demand within the ma...

Effects of economic development in China on skill-biased technical change in the US ¬リニ

In this study, we analyze the e¤ects of a decrease in unskilled labor in China on the direction of innovation in the US by incorporating production o¤shoring into a North-South model of directed technical change. We …nd that if o¤shoring is present (absent) in equilibrium, then a decrease in unskilled labor in the South would lead to skill-biased (unskill-biased) technical change in the North. ...
